EFCC To Charge Internet Fraudsters Nabbed In Okwu-Uratta, Others To Court

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has affirmed that the suspected internet fraudsters aka yahoo boys/419ers arrested yesterday in Okwu-Uratta and Aladinma alliances amongst others within Owerri will be charged to court, Duru Victor learns.

The EFCC gave this assurance today through its South-East Zonal Office Head, Usman Imam.

Recall that operatives of the EFCC raided some target residences including Flora and Faith Villas in Okwu-Uratta Alliance; Aladinma Alliance; B-court Alliance and Egbu area following an intelligence report.

According to the EFCC about 37 suspects were apprehended with 25 exotic cars, laptops and expensive mobile phones recovered.

In an official media statement regarding the EFCC's swoop yesterday, the Zonal Head Usman Imam who decried the high rate of cybercrime in the South East zone has blamed the acts of the alleged internet fraudsters on the erosion and breakdown of country's values.

He said the exercise was in line with the commission's mandate and lamented that if nothing was done, the country's leadership could be jeopardizes as many youths involved in cyber crimes are expected to take up leadership positions in the future.

"It is true that no society has been able to totally eradicate crime, but we are ready at least to reduce it to the barest minimum and it appears that this cybercrime is one of the challenges of our time, which the EFCC is willing to face drastically", he said.

He wondered why a university student, new graduate or youth corper will be looking for money to buy a car of N10 million and further affirmed that the suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations into the matter are concluded.
